Famous Bob Tullius/Group 44 Jaguar XJR-4 Trans-Am/IMSA GTO Racing Car to Headline at Russo and Steele Monterey

Bob Tullius/Group 44 Jaguar XJR-4 While California’s Monterey Peninsula is certainly accustomed to powerful and rare competition machinery, the busy auction and historic racing scenes will bear witness this August 15-17, 2013 to the sensory assault of pure V-12 thunder delivered by the one and only Jaguar XJR-4 Trans-AM/IMSA GTO racing car commissioned by Jaguar and built and raced by the famous Group 44 racing team of Bob Tullius and Brian Fuerstenau.

Renowned for its impeccable preparation, uncanny professionalism, and many victories throughout its history, Group 44 Inc. and its distinctive green-and-white racing cars very successfully carried the Triumph and Jaguar banners in America from the early 1960s through 1988. However, in the eyes of many, Group 44’s finest achievement was the team’s pivotal role in Jaguar’s return to international-level racing, culminating in the storied marque’s return to Le Mans during the 1980s. The car offered here, the one and only XJR-4 ever constructed, played a crucial part.

A purpose-built, fully tube-framed XJS “silhouette” with fabrication directed by “Lanky” Foushee, the XJR-4 packed nearly 600 bhp with its set-back Jaguar V-12 engine equipped with overhead cams, six Weber carburetors, and dry-sump lubrication. A race-prepped, all-Jaguar fully-independent suspension and a lightweight steel and aluminum body-shell rounded out the technical highlights. During the hard-fought 1981 Trans-Am season against hordes of Corvettes, Bob Tullius wheeled the lone XJR-4 to three victories and a second-place podium. At the 1982 running of the 24 Hours of Daytona, the XJR-4 was the first Jaguar in years to contest an international race and there, it became famous as the “World’s Fastest XJS” by reaching 194.46 mph on the Daytona banking.

Restored under SVRA Owner/President Howard Turner and featured in Classic Motorsports, the big “cat” is now offered for sale on behalf of the current owners. Highly maintained, well-known, and simply “on the button” in every respect, the XJR-4 carries HSR, SVRA, and VARAC credentials and it is accompanied by spares, logbooks, and racing set-up sheets from its Group 44 days. Look for it in action at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in August for the Monterey Pre-Historics and the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and be sure to register to bid for this singular and irreplaceable link to Jaguar’s successful road to Le Mans.

The 13th Annual Sports and Muscle in Monterey auction held by Russo and Steele Collector Automobile Auctions will once again be held on the waterfront remaining at the epicenter of the classic car week; the auction location is in the heart of downtown Monterey, adjacent to the famed Fisherman’s Wharf on Del Monte Avenue and Figueroa Street.  Russo and Steele will feature over 250 of the highest quality, collectible automobiles offered for auction over three days, August 15-17th, 2013.
