GM’s Oldsmobile Division was the third best-selling American marque in 1972, and the intermediate Cutlass line-up continued to be a prime factor in that success. In addition, thanks to Oldsmobile’s focus on quality, the Cutlass ranked among the best-built cars available during the era. The Cutlass continued to utilize Oldsmobile’s crisp long-hood/short deck “A-Body” styling, in use and very well refined since 1968, with a sporting elegance that appealed to buyers with its aggressive twin-grille design and sculpted bodylines.
While tightening emissions regulations, rising insurance premiums, unleaded fuels and activist politicians conspired to nearly strangle the American muscle car out of existence, Oldsmobile held the line with its sophisticated but brutally quick and great-handling Cutlass 442. While the celebrated 442 returned to option-package status as the “W-29 Appearance and Handling Package” for the 1972 model year, the 442 continued to benefit from the deft touch of “Dr. Oldsmobile” and offered all the performance and image buyers had come to expect. The 442 option was available on the Cutlass and Cutlass Supreme series, with a series of engines including Olds’ 350 V-8 continuing through the 455 cubic-inch V-8 in 270-horsepower L75 tune and the top L77/W-30 unit rated at a stout 300 horsepower and stump-pulling 410 pounds-feet of torque.
This real W-30 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 from 1972 received a full restoration that was completed within the past 10 years. Featuring great Sunburst Yellow over Tan colors, this real W-30 remains in pristine condition and includes a Hurst Dual/Gate shifter, ultra-rare red plastic inner fender liners up front, and aggressive W25 Force-Air Induction hood. Restoration documents, photographs, and a GM Certificate of Authenticity accompany this outstanding 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 at auction. Representing the end of an era with its final-year styling and performance options, this Cutlass 442 is a must-have example that will complement any collection of America’s finest and hottest muscle cars.
