Throughout its storied history, Porsche blessed the motoring world with many homologation specials engineered to meet international competition requirements while remaining perfectly adaptable and legal for road use. The stunning Carrera GT supercar traces its roots as a planned successor to the 911 GT1 of the 1990s, with development commencing in 1999. While FIA rule changes frustrated its endurance-racing plans, Porsche forged ahead nonetheless and when production ended in May 2006, some 1,270 of the highly anticipated Carrera GTs were built at the new Porsche facility in Leipzig, Germany. Of those, just 604 were destined for Americas hungry supercar market.

Powered by a mid-mounted 5.7-liter V-10 engine developing an enormous 605 horsepower , the Carrera GT delivers astounding, perhaps monstrous, performance. Acceleration from rest to 60 mph is achieved in just 3.5 seconds, with the 100-mph mark shattered in less than 7.0 seconds, en route to a top speed of 205 mph. While never intended for the dragstrip, the Carrera GT can also deliver remarkable 11.4-second elapsed times. Mated to the race-bred engine is a traditional six-speed manual gearbox and the simple yet elegant beech-wood gearshift knob pays silent homage to the Le Mans-conquering Porsche 917 racecars of years past.

Technical specifications remain stunning today. A carbon-fiber monocoque and sub-frame structure were produced and assembled by the ATR Composites Group in Italy. Both the clutch and brake components employ ceramic composite materials, combining strength and lightness. Even the Carrera GTs massive 19- and 20-inch wheels are made from ultra-lightweight forged magnesium. Similar to other contemporary Porsche models, an automated rear wing deploys above 70 mph, providing additional downforce and stability at speed. The Carrera GT interior is an exemplar of purposeful luxury, and safety features include front and side-impact airbags as well as anti-lock brakes. The Carrera GT proved a major success for Porsche, and perhaps MotorWeek host John Davis summed it up best: The Carrera GT is the best motivation to get rich that we’ve ever driven.

This staggeringly beautiful black on black example from the Carrera GTs 2005 production year, is believed to be one of the 604 original North American delivery Carrera GTs. A US-specification, emissions-compliant supercar, this Carrera GT is an investment-grade modern Porsche and an unqualified icon in its own time. Simply impressive throughout, this very highly equipped example demands serious consideration.
