The Pininfarina-designed and Scaglietti-built 308 GTB and GTS continue to be recognized among the finest and most beautifully styled modern road cars from Ferrari. Introduced at Paris in 1975, the 308 debuted as the replacement for the outgoing Dino 246 and, soon thereafter, the more angular Bertone-bodied 308 GT4. The first 712 cars were bodied in fiberglass, with only 100 of them allocated to the US market. The remainder of 308 production numbered some 11,400 examples and was bodied in steel panels. A transverse mid-mounted, all-alloy four-cam V-8 engine mounting a quartet of twin-choke Weber carburetors powered the sophisticated 308 and initially produced 240 hp in US-spec tune.
The 1980 308 GTSi featured Bosch Digiplex fuel injection, which replacing the four Weber carburetors, dropping horsepower from 240 to 205, but also decreased emissions significantly. The arrival of the Quattrovalvole or QV introduced four-valve cylinder heads for the Dino 3.0-liter V-8 engine, which increased power output to around 230 horsepower. This new cylinder head design also made it easier to comply with strict US emissions legislation. The Quattrovalvole could hit 60 MPH in a little over 6 seconds and topped out at 155 mph.
With its fully independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes, the 308 was extremely well balanced and remains highly regarded by driving enthusiasts today. In fact, a recent Classic & Sports Car road test celebrated its delicious accuracy, driver-friendly interior and sonorous V-8 engine. These sentiments were also expressed in a recent Octane magazine cover story, entitled Mid-Engined Masterpiece. Several 308s also appeared with actor Tom Selleck during the eight-year run of the 1980s TV series Magnum, P.I., further reinforcing the beautiful Ferraris enduring popularity.
Handsomely finished in Rosso Corsa over black leather upholstery, this top-specification 1984 Ferrari 308 GTS Quattrovalvole is a fabulously presented and highly original example. The interior remains in perfect condition. Benefitting from a recent full cosmetic refurbishment, 308’s in this condition are exceedingly difficult to find. This particular Ferrari is a very fine representative of the highly regarded and very successful Ferrari 308 series, in the models ultimate specification and the most desirable Targa form.
