In 1959, Rolls-Royce introduced the carefully improved Silver Cloud II as the successor to the original Silver Cloud, which debuted in 1955. While quite similar in outward appearance, the most noticeable difference between the two cars was the introduction of a new 6.23-liter V-8 engine, replacing the inline six-cylinder unit of the original Silver Cloud. Available for purchase from late 1959, the Silver Cloud II continued through early 1962, when the Silver Cloud III succeeded it.
The new Rolls-Royce V-8 engine was a sophisticated and powerful new design that delivered much-improved performance and the Silver Cloud II it powered was tremendously successful, particularly in the United States during the 1960s. Examples of the Silver Cloud II destined for America included many standard features, among them the smooth-shifting General Motors/Rolls-Royce Hydra-Matic four-speed automatic transmission, power-assisted brakes and steering, a radio, whitewall tires, and environmental controls including heat, defrost and updated ventilation systems.
Few changes were made to the highly regarded Standard Steel formal bodywork of the Silver Cloud II, with four-door sedans in both short- and long-wheelbase models. Silver Cloud II production figures included 2,417 short-wheelbase cars, 258 long-wheelbase examples, and 107 convertibles, coupes, and professional cars bodied by custom coachbuilders. In popular culture, the Silver Cloud was mentioned in hit songs and appeared in countless TV shows and movies, representing the automotive equivalent of the rich and famous, including Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, John Lennon, and fashion designer Massimo Vignelli when he gained fame in New York.
A very fine country classic automobile for ladies and gentlemen, this fascinating left-hand drive Silver Cloud II was produced at Crewe in December 1960 and exported to the United States during early 1961. Over the past two years, this Silver Cloud II was painstakingly restored inside and out by Rolls-Royce mechanics in South Carolina. Retaining its factory-original features and options including air conditioning, which was listed on the Rolls-Royce factory build sheet and dealer-installed, new items fitted during the restoration include the leather upholstery, carpeting, headliner, tires, an updated radio unit, and the bumpers. Interestingly, this Silver Cloud II was reportedly used by HRH Queen Elizabeth’s entourage in New York during the 1970s, and it includes Royal badges. Rust-free and matching numbers, this handsome and elegant Silver Cloud II is reported to run great with the clock, all instruments, and the air conditioning functioning well. Ready to drive, show, and enjoy, this outstanding 1961 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II is further complete with Rolls-Royce build sheets and invoices.
