Throughout its long and rich history as the cornerstone division of General Motors, Buick has consistently represented prestige, style, advanced engineering, and great value. By July 1957, the nine millionth Buick was built, and with over 407,000 cars produced that year, Buick occupied an enviable 4th place in American automobile sales rankings.
The Special model line played a huge part in Buick’s 1950s success story, with its updated new bodies for 1957 featuring clean and sleek lines with masterful use of complementary bright trim, including dramatically dipped bodyside Sweepspears, hood ventiports and fashionable two-tone paint finishes in a growing palette of colors. Visually low and long, the Special was by far the most popular Buick model for 1957, offered as a complete model line with seven body styles, including the 4-door Sedan, 4-door Hardtop Sedan, 2-door Sedan, 2-door Hardtop Coupe, 2-door Convertible Coupe, and the 4-door Station Wagon and 4-door Riviera Station Wagon.
Of all Special models, the 2-door Hardtop Coupe – priced from $2,704 – was Buick’s best seller for 1957 and it is easy to see why with its handsome styling, comfortably appointed interior, and powerful 364 cubic-inch “Nailhead” V-8 engine delivering a rated 250 horsepower. While Buick’s entry-level model line, the Special was very well equipped with standard features and amenities including a “Red Line” speedometer motif, glovebox courtesy lamp, dual horns, a trip-mileage indicator, directional signals, dual sun-shades, and color-coordinated dash panels. Closed Special models were trimmed in nylon/Cordaveen upholstery maintaining the high-content, high-value formula that made the Special so popular with Buick’s loyal and upwardly mobile buyers.
Clearly benefiting handsomely from an exceptional and complete restoration, this 1957 Buick Special 2-door Hardtop Coupe features outstanding two-tone livery with a handsomely restored interior. The uniquely low roofline and rear-window treatment of the Special are notable and later expressions of the celebrated Harley Earl GM Design era and set this Special further apart today. From its fine grille insert and front-bumper “Dagmar” bombshells, to its distinctive rear-bumper treatment incorporating the exhaust outlet, bright trim is excellent and the interior is fresh and factory-correct in appearance. Underhood, the famed 364 cubic-inch “Nailhead” V-8 engine is well finished and detailed. In addition to power steering, this Special is updated with a modern dual-circuit brake master cylinder with power booster for sure stops while cruising Main Street.
