To Southern California’s legions of hot-rodders, drag racers, and fans of anything cool or fast with a motor on wheels, the name Tom McCourry is as recognized as his friends and fellow Road Kings car club members including Tom Ivo, Skip Torgerson, Don Prudhomme, Bob Muravez, and many more formative members of the drag racing fraternity. The man who bought Tom Ivo’s monstrous four-engine, four-wheel-drive, Buick-powered “Showboat’ during the 1960s, added a semi-Buick station wagon body and turned the car into a tire-smoking, crowd-drawing exhibition legend dubbed the “Wagon Master,” McCourry was obviously one with an eye and the ability to take his visions and convert them into reality. Growing up in Southern California during the 1940s and 1950s, McCourry likely dreamed of the day he would one day own an early-‘50s Cadillac, in sleek Coupe deVille form.
During the 2000s, after a career and life that could most likely fill a book, much like his buddies, Tom McCourry had a ’52 Cadillac Coupe deVille restored and custom-built into the cool ride now offered here at Monterey. From the 50th Anniversary year for Cadillac, this Coupe deVille carries bodylines and styling very much reminiscent of Briggs Cunningham’s upstart Le Mans racing Cadillacs of 1950 and several examples that challenged the deadly Carrera Panamericana open-road races held in Mexico during the early 1950s.
Beautifully finished in Cobalt Blue and retaining a mostly stock – and luxurious – interior with beautifully button-tufted leather seats and blue carpeting, the Coupe deVille casts an amazing profile with its lowered suspension beautifully accentuating the visual impression of the car’s low roofline and overall length. Fog lamps, chrome wire-spoke wheels, wide whites, a combination spot lamp/rearview mirror, and abundant yet tasteful brightwork, plus the Cadillac’s Harley Earl/GM body combine to form this ride’s incredible presence. Motivation is provided by a powerful 1999 Cadillac Northstar 32-valve, fuel-injected V-8 engine installed by Tri-C Engineering, nicely cooled by an aluminum radiator and electric fan, mated to a versatile GM 700R4 overdrive automatic transmission for cruising ease and good fuel economy. Modern air conditioning ensures comfort, and the discrete custom sound system was installed by Danny at Soundsations. A ride fit for a legend, this very cool ’52 Cadillac Coupe deVille marks a wonderful find!
