Introduced at the March 2003 Geneva Show, the Gallardo joined the Murcielago as the highly anticipated addition to Lamborghini’s former single-model lineup. Smaller and lighter than it’s V-12 stablemate, the Gallardo featured permanent all-wheel drive with power delivered by a mid-mounted 5.0-liter V-10 engine producing some 500 horsepower and capable of propelling the new Larmborghini supercar to a top end nearing 200 miles per hour. Featuring extremely clean styling with a crisp, angular overall theme, the Gallardo design is credited to Fabrizio Giugiaro, the son of none other than Giorgetto Giugiaro, the design legend and founder of the renowned Ital Design firm.
Lamborghini’s development of the Gallardo was swift, with the open-air Spyder officially unveiled at the September, 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show. More than simply an open version of the Gallardo Coupe, the Spyder was a completely new model with an attractive new design and a unique system operating the fabric roof utilizing the engine compartment for storage. Design work for the Gallardo Spyder was achieved by a close collaboration of Lamborghini’s Centro Stile department with engineers from the Research and Development team, resulting in a clean, sharp, and sleek Lamborghini with an outstanding presence, being at once compact, athletic, and purposeful with a cab-forward cockpit and short body overhangs.
A tour de force of engineering in and of itself, the Gallardo’s convertible top features an electronic control system, an electric pump, a carbon-fiber engine/top cover panel, six hydraulic cylinders (four to operate the top and two for the engine/top cover), two electric actuators, and an electric motor to raise and lower the rear window. While seemingly complex, the roof mechanism is extremely simple to operate with two pushbuttons at the center of the dashboard, and the entire operation is accomplished in just over 20 seconds. Structural and passenger safety features of the Gallardo Spyder include reinforcement of the space frame in the sills and A-pillars, plus automatic roll-over protection utilizing two “pop-ups” integrated with the air bag system.
Further differing from the basic Gallardo, the new Spyder featured a number of important mechanical updates, including a power increase of the 5.0-liter, 10-cylinder engine to 520 hp at a screaming 8,000 rpm. In addition, lower ratios were applied to the six-speed gearbox for quicker acceleration, the steering was refined for more direct and precise response to driver inputs, and the suspension was fine-tuned. As with the closed coupe, the Gallardo Spyder continues to use lightweight aluminum bodywork and permanent four-wheel drive. As expected, the Gallardo Spyder delivers incredible performance with blistering acceleration from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.3 seconds and top speeds of 314 kilometers per hour with the top up and 307 km/h with the top lowered! In addition to virtually countless standard features, the Gallardo coupe and Spyder were available in a multitude of eye-catching color combinations and with many optional features including packages for buyers to further personalize their vehicles. Finished in black over yellow-piped black upholstery, this 2007 Gallardo Spyder has travelled only an approximate 6,800 miles from new. Stunning throughout, it mark a simply outstanding find at auction – and one that will be rarely presented.
