Rooted in the pioneering engineering work by Enzo Ferraris late son Alfredino (Dino) and brought to fruition by Vittorio Jano, the basic Ferrari V-6 engine design went on to very successfully power various Ferrari F1, F2, and sports-racing cars during the 1960s. With the new V-6 racing engine in mind, Pininfarina displayed an unpowered styling exercise named the Dino 206 S Speciale in Dino Ferraris honor at the 1965 Paris Salon, followed by the Dino Berlinetta GT at Turin the next year, complete with a transverse mid-mounted V-6. Scaglietti built the achingly beautiful Pininfarina-designed bodywork.
The first production Dino was designated 206 GT (denoting 2.0 liters of engine displacement and six cylinders) and debuted in 1967 at Turin. Notably, the 206 GT marked the first mid-engine production car released by Ferrari and heralded the debut of the new Ferrari-based Dino brand. Just 150 were produced. The 246 GT arrived for 1969, with a power and performance boost courtesy of its enlarged 2,418 cc engine. Nearly 2,500 were built. The Targa-roofed 246 GTS debuted for 1972 and was produced through 1974, featuring a lift-off roof panel and the elimination of the Berlinettas rear quarter-windows, marking the ultimate Dino evolution with just 1,274 produced.
While all surviving examples are in high demand today, this wonderful example from 1973, is even more so, with its uncommon purity of line without the fender flares more commonly associated with the later-production cars. It is an original US-delivery Dino. Handsomely presented in a great color combination and clearly benefits from proper maintenance, now standing ready for a new and enthusiastic owner to enjoy its many sublime charms. As one of – if not the – most beautiful model ever to come from Ferrari, it will surely deliver a truly unforgettable driving experience with the aggressively snarling exhaust note and mechanical music emanating from its race-bred, mid-mounted DOHC V-6 engine providing the perfect soundtrack!
This outstanding Dino GTS benefits from a recent cosmetic restoration that includes a complete new interior. The desirable “Daytona Style” seats are brand new from the very best supplier; Italian Car Parts of Oregon, the carpets are new with correct wool pile, color and binding, the correct and original “mouse hair” dash material has been completely replaced with the newer version (an older Italian supplier’s material was to stiff) and both looks and feels absolutely factory correct.
A full detail of the engine compartment, undercarriage and has been performed with the correct finishes. The exception being modern hose clamps for driving reliability. All four bumpers and some related chrome items have been replated by Christensen Chrome of Los Angeles (noted for Pebble Beach winning brightwork) and also the related weatherstrips have been freshened with new units where applicable.
Now presenting itself with outstanding Corsa Rossa red paint finish, and well prepared cosmetics with documented service receipts, this Dino GTS will prove to be an astute acquisition for the next enthusiast looking for a show worthy entry and delightful driving experience as Enzo intended!
