The 1935 Ford woodie was one of the company’s rarer offerings for that year. 1935 was the first year for the “Fat Fendered Fords” and there were just over 5,000 woodies produced. They were labor intensive to build and expensive to buy. This is one of only a handful of ‘35 Ford hot rod woodies in the country.
This car was built to be a safe, dependable, comfortable driver capable of keeping up with freeway traffic and has been driven throughout the West Coast. It has appeared in the Grand National Roadster Show, the San Francisco Rod Custom and Motorcycle Show and was invited to Blackie’s Fresno Autorama. It was featured in Street Rodder and Rod & Custom magazines, as well as the Goodguys Gazette and was a cover car for and featured in the Woodie Times (monthly publication of the National Woodie club). The car was picked by Rod & Custom Magazine as one of the top 100 Rods and Customs for 1999 and has won the Goodguys “Wonderful Woodie Award” four times. It was one of two cars shown on the Goodguys Del Mar Event shirt three years ago.
As for specifics, the car was built from an all original and complete “basket case” 35 woodie. The chassis is made up of Chassis Engineering components with a dropped front axle, split wishbone, power front disc brakes and an 8” rear on parallel leaf springs. Power is from a 350 / 300hp small block Chevy crate motor with Edelbrock intake, carb, and MSD distributor. The transmission is a Turbo 350. It has Vintage Air, Classic instruments, Walker radiator, Ron Francis wiring and Coker tires on chrome 15” Wheel Vintique wheels with 50 Merc hub caps. Approx 80% of the wood is new, with fixed windows in the rear doors and quarter panels. Interior is caramel colored leather with tan square weave carpet. Top is blue Stafast with upholstery and top done by Rich Santana. The body mods include smooth hood sides, filled grill shell and cowl vent, chopped headlight stands, and a custom rear pan that houses the taillights and license plate.
ALL WOODIES are great, however if you want something that is a bit different, yet keeping within the mainstream woodie tradition, this should be a consideration.
