Debuted at the 1981 Geneva Auto Show, the Bertone-designed Lamborghini Jalpa, named after a breed of fighting bull in company tradition, succeeded the Lamborghini Silhouette and carried design DNA from the original Lamborghini Urraco, which was released from 1973. A mid-mounted aluminum V-8 engine, enlarged to 3.5 liters with a longer stroke than that of the prior Silhouette, delivered 255 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 231 pounds-feet of peak torque. A quartet of 40 DCNF twin-choke carburetors handled induction. The Jalpa’s power delivery was said to be smoother than that of the Silhouette, making the Jalpa an ideal choice for buyers who also intended to use their cars for commuting or around-town duties.
The Jalpa’s fully independent suspension utilized coil springs, MacPherson struts and anti-roll bars front and rear. Rolling stock comprised updated 16×7.5-inch Campagnolo wheels mounting 205/55VR16 tires up front and 225/50VR16 tires in the rear. Skidpad performance reached 0.85 g. Performance was strong by any standard, with the Jalpa was capable of sprinting from 0-60 MPH in 7.3 seconds en route to a top speed of 161 MPH. A period Road & Track test reported that the Jalpa could run through the quarter-mile in 15.4 seconds at 92 MPH. The Jalpa’s many amenities included leather upholstery, air conditioning, an AM/FM cassette stereo audio system, power windows and a power driver’s side mirror. First shown at the 1981 Geneva Show, the Jalpa was released for worldwide sale as a 1982 model, joining the “senior” Countach and broadening Lamborghini’s product line. It also went on to become Lamborghini’s most successful V-8 model to date. By the time production ended in July 1988, 416 Jalpas were sold. Detail updates previewed at Geneva in 1984 included a change from black plastic body parts to body-color pieces and the taillights were now circular in design.
