Featuring Byzantine Gold Poly over Tan leather with a Dark Brown soft top and body-color detachable hardtop, this 450 SL has covered only 35,167 miles, with the car accompanied by many service records confirming mileage and maintenance history. The 1972 and 1973 model years were the only for the desirable “small bumper” 450 SLs in the United States. This car, built in December of 1972 as a 1973 model, retains its desirable small bumpers. There is a large file of service records from 1982 to the present documenting maintenance history and actual miles. The original metal owner tag is with the car, plus both hard top removal tools as well as the original build card and the original owner’s manual and books.
First Owner: Lady doctor from South Bend, Indiana, purchased new in 1973. Traded in at Gurley-Leep Buick – South Bend, IN in the Summer of 1982 with approximately 27,500 miles on its odometer.
Second Owner: A gentleman from Elkhart, IN purchased the car from Gurley-Leep Buick – South Bend, IN in July 1982. He paid for the car, in full (carbon of bank money order he used in history file). Odometer statement from that sale, dated July 20, 1982 reads 27,528. This gentleman drove the car on nice Spring and Summer days only. He maintained the car regularly. It was always serviced at a well known Mercedes specialist in Elkhart, IN, Quality Import Service until he sold it in 2015 with just under 35,000 miles on its odometer.
Third Owner (and Consignor): Purchased the car from the second owner in May 2015 and enjoyed it for only a few hundred miles over the summer. This car drives like a new 450 SL.
This 450 SL runs and drives beautifully. The extensive maintenance history with the car shows that it has always been well cared for. It accelerates quickly and shifts smoothly. Steering and suspension is tight, as it should be, for a low mile car. Many rubber and plastic pieces under the hood and suspension parts have been replaced over the years due to age deterioration. Please refer to the extensive history folder full of receipts for details. The original front seats were covered with MB tex vinyl, then recovered by the second owner with the leather, who also added a modern stereo to the car. Otherwise, the interior of the car is original. I would not hesitate to drive this car across the country.
