Launched in 1971, the new R107 generation of Mercedes-Benz ‘SL’ sports cars replaced the 230/250/280 “Pagoda” series, quickly assuming “instant icon” status and remaining in production for nearly 20 years along five variants. Powered by a 5.6-liter V-8 developing 227 rated horsepower, the 560SL of 1985 through 1989 marked the ultimate expression of the concept. As always, Mercedes-Benz ownership signified that one had indeed “arrived” and this cachet continues today, with many smart collectors and enthusiasts gravitating to these top-quality and fast GT-oriented cars.
The product of a six-month search by the Consignor for the right example, this 1987 Mercedes-Benz 560SL is an exceptional car and an outstanding find at auction. Finished in rare and striking black over Burgundy with bright and shiny paint and highly attractive throughout, it clearly benefits from proper garage storage and professional maintenance by Mercedes technicians. Current mileage stands at 94,722. Solid and mostly rust-free with just some surface rust spots noted, this 560SL remains in highly original condition. The very good exterior includes trim is in good shape with minimal nicks and scuffs, the body panels appear original with no signs of previous damage. The original vent windows remain in excellent working order, and all exterior components appear to be complete and in proper order.
Highly desirable features and accessories include both a good hard top with rear-window defroster and a new soft top with a clear rear window. New items include the tires and premium sound system with Sirius/XM satellite radio and CD player. The interior is very good overall with minimal wear and the leather, carpeting, dash, and wood trim are all good. The original leather upholstery has no splits or tears, notwithstanding some discoloration on the driver’s outside seat bolster. All gauges work with no service lights on. The original-equipment replacement soft top is new, with a clear rear window. The factory hard top is in good condition with rear window defroster. and dash are all in good condition. There are no unusual smells or odors in this vehicle.
Mechanically, this 560SL is in good condition and reported to run and drive great with good acceleration and precise handling. The 5.6-liter, fuel-injected V-8 engine provides 227 factory-rated horsepower and runs strongly, with the 4-speed automatic transmission shifting positively and smoothly. No unusual noises or vibrations are noted by the Consignor when running or driving and this 560SL will certainly make an excellent daily driver or stylish and enjoyable weekend cruiser. All mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems appear to be working properly. The engine compartment, undercarriage, and trunk are clean and complete and the undercarriage is clean and original. There are no sign of damage or repairs to the body, frame, or suspension. The spare wheel and tire and jack are in good condition, as are the trunk and trunk carpeting. Rolling on proper factory wheels with good 205X65R15 tires, this Los Angeles-based 560SL is truly exceptional and represents outstanding value!
