While many observers during the 1920s wrote off Ford Motor Company as being unable to progress beyond its hugely successful Model T, Henry Ford shocked everyone remotely interested in automobiles in June 1927 when he ordered his factories to shut down. When the Model Ts successor, the Model A, debuted several months later, it marked a leap forward with its handsome, Lincoln-inspired styling, the product of the design genius of Henry Ford’s talented son, Edsel. Mechanically, the Model A’s larger 200 cubic inch, 40-horsepower four-cylinder engine produced double the output of its predecessor, and driving was made much easier with the Model A’s new sliding-gear manual transmission with a simple shift pattern.
From 1928, the Model A was available in hardworking pickup-truck form, initially as a closed-cab model. In recognition of the fast-growing importance of styling to sales, the Model A received a gentle restyling for 1930, giving the car and its pickup variants a bolder overall look and a lower center of gravity. The hood and radiator were raised, with the latter’s shell now made from stainless steel, wheel size was reduced to 19 inches in diameter, wider tires gave a better ride, and a higher cowl profile allowed a larger fuel tank. For 1931, the final Model A production year, a larger 22.2 cubic-foot cargo box and a wider selection of exterior colors became available.
This rare and very attractively presented 1931 Ford Model A Model 82-A Deluxe closed-cab pickup benefits from a complete restoration to award-winning standards. Accolades include First Place Blue Ribbon honors at the 1989 National Model A Convention & A.T.H.S. Antique Truck Show Henry’s Best. Finished in Valley Green, a correct 1931 Ford commercial-vehicle color, this 82-A is handsomely accented by Straw body accents and spoked wheels, plus black fenders and lower surfaces. Proper chrome front bumper, nickel and stainless steel items including radiator cover and headlights, complete this highly striking classic Ford pickup. Excellent additional items include a side mounted spare wheel and tire, extra paint, a hydraulic jack, an owners’ manual, tool bag, and tools in special oak box.
