As the ultra-performance version of the Ford’s brilliant new-generation Mustang, the 2016 Shelby GT350 and track-focused GT350R lightweight mark a quantum leap from their legendary 1960s namesakes. Sold only in the United States, the GT350R is a limited-production model. At their heart, the newest Shelbys feature power from the wicked 5.2-liter V-8 engine, internally codenamed “Voodoo” and shared by the GT350 and GT350R. A bored and stroked version of the Mustang GT’s 5.0-liter V-8, the Voodoo is equipped with Ford’s very first flat-plane crankshaft, good for a Ferrari-style 8,000-rpm redline. Delivering an awesome, wailing exhaust note to match, the race-bred Voodoo V-8 delivers 526 horsepower and stands as the most powerful naturally-aspirated production engine to date from Ford.
While the new GT350’s acceleration stats are awesome, quoted by Car and Driver at 4.3 seconds for the 0-60 sprint and the quarter-mile in just 12.5 seconds at 117 mph, the Shelby’s overall driving dynamics and handling are equally impressive. On the skidpad, the GT350 throws down 0.98 g of lateral acceleration and braking from 70 mph is achieved in just 152 feet. Other GT350 wizardry includes a lightweight Tremec 3160 6-speed manual transmission, electric power steering with three driver-selectable modes, exotic composite iron-aluminum rotors supplied by Germany’s SHW, and Brembo calipers.
The factory-available 920A Track Package ups the performance ante for the GT350R at an additional cost of $13,500.00. The Items included in the Track package are magnetic suspension, a front shock-tower brace, higher-rate springs, and oil coolers for the engine, transmission, and differential. In addition to the Track Package, ‘R’ highlights include a carbon-fiber rear wing and the first application of carbon-fiber wheels on a production Ford model. Weighing just 18 pounds each, these wheels are sourced from Australia’s Carbon Revolution. Monstrous Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires measure 305/30 front and 315/30 rear for incredible grip. Featuring full independent suspension, the GT350R’s power is delivered by a Torsen torque-sensing differential with 3.73:1 gears and limited slip. Other ‘R’ tweaks include relocated interior switchgear and deletion of the rear seats, stereo, air conditioning, and backup camera; however, the electronic items can be added back in with the optional $3,000 Electronics package. A handful of options are available for the GT350 and GT350R, including a painted black roof treatment, racing stripes, and a special dealer-installed full vehicle cover.
Production of the extreme GT350R is limited and demand from hard-core driving enthusiasts, racers, and smart collectors is expected to far exceed available supply. This pure GT350R remains true to its name, unhindered by weight- and cost-adding electronics, optioned only with the over-the-top racing stripe (with red accent) costing $475 and the $375 full vehicle cover. With its outstanding engineering, hard-core specifications, and unbeatable Shelby legacy, this 2016 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R is an instant collectible and one of the world’s finest performance cars – bar none!
