Following the GT90 show car of 1995, the Ford GT concept debuted in 2002 to celebrate the Blue Oval’s upcoming centennial and it left no doubt as to its heritage. Inspired by the all-conquering GT40s that beat Ferrari at Le Mans and won the famed 24-hour race four years in a row from 1966 through 1969, the new GT was far more than a mere design throwback. In fact, it was a true ‘supercar’ the likes of which Detroit had never before produced, capable of lightning-fast sprints to 60 mph in well under four seconds yet also tremendously competent in every other discipline, including cornering and braking. On top speed alone, it eclipsed Porsche’s Carrera GT and the Mercedes-Benz McLaren SLR. During testing at the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife circuit, the GT proved even quicker there than some of Porsche’s best.
Power came from a supercharged 5.4-liter V-8 with a six-speed gearbox, producing a monstrous 550 bhp and a throaty, muscular exhaust note to match. Featuring space-age materials and construction technologies, each GT was produced in four distinct stages with initial assembly at Norwalk, Ohio’s Mayflower Vehicle Systems, paint by Saleen at Saleen Special Vehicles in Troy, Michigan, engine assembly at Ford’s Romeo, Michigan engine plant, followed by engine and transmission installation, plus interior finishing at Ford’s Wixom, Michigan plant. Interestingly, the Ford GT was the last vehicle project competed at Wixom.
Only 4,038 examples of the Ford GT were produced in total, with approximately 550, 1,900 and 1,600 built during 2004, 2005, and 2006 respectively. Predictably, demand outstripped supply, with early cars selling for substantial premiums over the basic Maufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) and prospective buyers vying for vehicle-production slots. No doubt to the delight of Henry Ford II, Enzo Ferrari’s fierce archrival during the 1960s, each GT was most assuredly more than capable of blowing the doors off its competitors from Maranello. Awesome in red over black, this Ford GT is well-equipped for comfortable driving to match its incredible, race-bred performance with air condition and cruise control.
With only 2850 miles and finished in red over black, this stunning Ford GT epitomizes the modern ‘supercar’ field with its 550-bhp supercharged DOHC 32-valve 5.4-liter engine, backed by a 6-speed manual transmission. Riding on a race-bred all-independent suspension, it is capable of blistering performance, yet docile under normal use, equipped with A/C and cruise control. This GT also comes with all books, records, factory cover and even the Window Sticker. As offered, this GT is an amazing find that will not likely present itself again.
