BMW launched the 2002 Turbo at the 1973 Frankfurt Motor Show. This was BMW’s first turbocharged production car and the first turbocharged car since General Motor’s brief offering in the 1960’s. It produced 170hp at 5800 rpms with 180ft-lbs of torque. The Turbo used the 2002 Tii engine accompanied by a KKK turbocharger. Additionally, a Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection system was used. BMW built only 1672 examples of the Turbo. None were officially exported to the United States. Although not officially labeled as an M car, the 2002 Turbo was developed by BMW Motorsport which was later renamed BMW M; it is therefore considered a member of the M series.
This impressive example, VIN 4290233, was delivered to Palazzolo, Verona, Italy on 22 March 1974. It eventually found its way to the United States. The current owner, a BMW Classic Car enthusiast, purchased the car in December of 2014 and immediately began a “rotisserie restoration” by two of Classic BMW’s most recognizable specialists: 2002AD in Pomona, CA and Bavarian Rennsport in Ramona, CA. 2002AD’s Ben Miller performed the principal coordination of the project. While Bavarian Rennsport’s Bill Holmes, who is known for his encyclopedic knowledge of the Turbo, performed all final tuning and verification of restoration accuracy. Exacting detail has been applied to originality in every aspect of the restoration process. This included a full drivetrain rebuild, full interior restoration and complete body restoration. This Turbo is as precise as the day it left the factory assembly line. Finished in factory original oil based Glasurit paint, it is a stunning representation of BMW’s heritage.
