    Developed at the suggestion of Rhode Island Ford dealer Bob Tasca and Hot Rod magazine editor Eric Dahlquist, the soon-to-be-famous 428 Cobra Jet Mustang was released on April 1, 1968 using a masterful combination of proven and readily available high-performance components found within Ford’s parts bin. Among them was a pair of 427 low-riser heads and a 427 intake for improved breathing. The CJ package also included a 735-cfm Holley four-barrel carburetor and 10.51 compression. Heavy-duty underpinnings included reinforced front shock towers and staggered rear shock absorbers to make full use of the Mustang’s newfound power.

    Capable of low 14-second quarter-mile ETs in stock trim and mid-11s in racing tune, CJ Mustangs quickly established a fearsome reputation. For the CJ’s landmark debut, Ford launched a six-car assault on the 1968 NHRA Winternationals, with Ford-sponsored drivers including Gas Ronda, Jerry Harvey, Hubert Platt, Don Nicholson, and Al Joniec. All six cars were race-prepped by Holman-Moody-Stroppe in Long Beach, California and a number of classes were contested, including C/Stock Automatic C/SA, Super Stock E SS/E, and Super Stock E/Automatic SS/EA. When the smoke cleared, four of the six Cobra Jet Mustangs reached the final rounds. Incredibly, the all-CJ SS/E final round pitted Joniec against Platt, with Joniec taking the class victory with a 12.49-second ET and going on to win Super Stock Eliminator over Dave Wren’s Hemi ‘Cuda.

    The 428 Cobra Jet was a huge success for Ford, both on-track and at dealer showrooms, with the option continued for 1969 and 1970. Further developments included functional Ram Air induction with a through-the-hood Shaker scoop. The 428 Super Cobra Jet upped the ante with heavy-duty internals including a stronger crankshaft and Le Mans connecting rods, plus a specific flywheel and counterweight, as well as a crankshaft harmonic balancer. For the truly committed, the Drag Pack option included an engine-oil cooler and automatically kicked in when 3.911 or 4.301 rear-end gears were selected from the Mustang’s many factory-available options. To say the SCJ/Drag Pack Mustang was a potent performer is a severe understatement, a fact confirmed by Fast Mustangs author and marque expert Alex Gabbard, who declared it the fastest-running pure stock in the history of man.

    Purchased brand new at Bob Rice Ford in Boise, Idaho and remaining in Idaho as a show car for much of its life, this very rare 428 SCJ/Drag Pack Mustang Mach 1 Sportsroof fastback retains its numbers matching drivetrain with correct date codes and casting numbers. An MCA-level rotisserie restoration was performed to factory build specifications with all chrome either refurbished or re-plated. The floor is pristine and the torque boxes and jack points are in like-new condition. The glass and even the seats in this car are the original items from new. Finished in Light Ivy Yellow, a very rare Ford paint color, this Mustang is one of only 2 1970 428 SCJ Mach I cars so finished. Additional factory options included

    This show-quality Mustang is one of only 857 Mach 1 428 Super Cobra Jet/Drag Pack cars built for 1970, making it far more rare than any Boss 302 and rarer still than the 1969 Boss 429. Excellent documentation includes a copy of the original window sticker and an Elite Marti Report confirming it is 1 of just 2 1970 Mach 1 Mustangs built with Light Ivy Yellow paint.
