From 1931 through the end of civilian automobile production with America’s entry into WW II in 1942, General Motors’ Buick Division competed with its top Series 90 against many high-end competitors and even its corporate siblings from LaSalle and Cadillac. For 1933, arguably the trough of the Great Depression, Buick’s senior Series 90 models rode upon an enlarged chassis with a 138-inch wheelbase – four inches longer than the Series 90 chassis of 1932.
A focused range of five Series 90 body styles was available for 1933, including the 7-passenger, 4-door Sedan , the 90L 4-door Limousine, the 91 2-door Club Sedan, 96, a focused range of five body styles including a 4-door, 7-Passenger Sedan (Model 90), 4-door, 7-Passenger Limousine (Model 90L), a 2-door, 5-Passenger Club Sedan (Model 91), 2-door, 5-Passenger Victoria Coupe (Model 96), and 4-door, 5-Passenger Sedan (Model 97). Powering the Series 90 cars was Buick’s renowned “valve-in-head” OHV inline eight-cylinder engine, displacing 345 cubic inches and delivering 104 brake horsepower at just 2,800 engine revolutions. The engine is a 344.8 straight-eight developing 100 horsepower. A fully synchronized three-speed manual transmission and four-wheel mechanical brakes rounded out the Series 90 mechanical package.
This highly striking 1933 Buick Series 90 Limousine carries exceptional history from new, having been built for Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, with the body designed and fabricated by the Queen’s Royal carriage maker. Among its many wonderful features, the Limousine is richly appointed with a beautiful and plush black satin interior and distinctive highlights include a Dutch Tulip motif, woven and braided door pulls, a glass division window between the chauffeur’s and passenger compartments, and “trafficator” signal semaphores. Rightly recognized as a Full Classic(R) automobile by the Classic Car Club of America (CCCA), this Series 90 Limousine was formerly displayed for 15 years within the renowned Imperial Palace Auto Museum in Las Vegas, where it was known as being “formerly owned by Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands.” Most recently, it was a Gold Award Winner at the 2009 Buick Club of America Grand National meet, earning a 400-point score in the process and authenticated as a completely original vehicle there.
