While Oldsmobile is believed to have created the first true muscle car with the release of its V-8 Rocket 88 in 1949, it was not until 1964 that it returned to the concept with its 442 option, derived from the Police Apprehender Pursuit package on the intermediate F-85 Cutlass. Standing for the car’s four-barrel carburetor, four-speed transmission and dual exhaust system, the 442 designation announced a serious performer with a unique combination of blistering performance, outstanding handling, and upscale panache. A major restyling for 1968 introduced a handsome aircraft fuselage-inspired design theme that would continue through 1972. In addition, the 442 gained new status in 1968 as a separate series within the Oldsmobile model line-up.

Since 1966, the ultimate high-performance 442 was equipped with the W-30 performance package including a highly efficient cold-air intake system, internal engine tweaks, and a number of other carefully engineered modifications. For 1970, Dr. Oldsmobile unleashed the ultimate W-Machines with the massive new 455 cubic-inch V-8 now available. Rated at 370 vastly underrated horsepower and delivering a 500 foot-pound wallop of pavement-scorching torque, the W-30 engine powered the 442 through the quarter-mile with ETs in the high-13s in stock tune at over 100 mph.

Known to Oldsmobile fans as The Black Stallion, this exceptional W-30 Holiday Coupe is one of only 1,032 built for 1970 with a 4 speed M21 manual transmission and infamous 328 degree cam shaft. It also stands as the only Oldsmobile to ever receive a perfect 1,000-point score at the Muscle Car and Corvette Nationals. A real code 19 , 19 Black-paint example with Pearl White buckets, it is accompanied by bulletproof GM Canada paperwork confirming all factory options and colors, plus the Dealer Invoice and ownership documented back to the original owner, along with notarized affidavits on file.

Other highly desirable factory options include the Sport steering wheel, 3.91 Anti-Spin rear end with W-27 Aluminum housing and differential cover added, Rally Pack gauges, and 5 period Uniroyal Tiger Paw G-70 tires on original Super Stock I SSI wheels. The rear spoiler is an original owner-added item. The frame-off, nut-and-bolt restoration was completed to show-winning standards by the specialists at MASCAR, and the matching numbers W-30 engine was blueprinted and dyno-tested by Kenny Maisano. Importantly, the potent W-30 engine and 4-speed transmission are matching numbers, original and the sheetmetal is all OEM/NOS from General Motors. Mileage is certified at only an approximate 38,000 Box A miles on one of the car’s recent title documents. Additional certification of this highly rare, top-of-the-line W-30 is provided by the Rocket Report issued by marque expert Stephen J. Minore. A top-notch, show-winning restoration on an incredibly rare W-30/4-speed Oldsmobile 442, this stunning and impeccably documented example marks the Holy Grail of Holiday Coupes for committed collectors and enthusiasts of the finest American Supercars ever produced.
