Following the GT90 show car of 1995 the Ford GT concept debuted in 2002 to celebrate the Blue Ovals upcoming centennial. Leaving no doubt as to its heritage the new GT was inspired by the all-conquering GT40s that beat Ferrari at Le Mans and dominated the famed 24-hour race from 1966 through 1969. Far more than a mere design throwback the new Ford GT was a true supercar and capable of excelling in every possible discipline. Powering the new GT was a mid-mounted supercharged 32-valve 5.4-liter V-8 engine with competition-type dry sump lubrication system producing 550 bhp with a muscular exhaust note to match. Power was delivered by a six-speed gearbox/rear transaxle from Ricardo the supplier of racing transmissions for international GT rally and open-wheel racing. All-independent suspension and huge vented Brembo four-wheel disc brakes rounded out the mechanical package.
Built using space-age materials and construction technologies each GT was produced in five distinct stages with initial assembly at Norwalk Ohios Mayflower Vehicle Systems paint by Saleen Special Vehicles in Troy Michigan engine assembly at Fords Romeo Michigan engine plant and then installation of the engine transaxle and interior finishing at Fords Wixom Michigan plant. Interestingly the Ford GT was the last vehicle project to be competed at Wixom. Only 4038 examples were produced in total with approximately 550 1900 and 1600 built during 2004 2005 and 2006 respectively. Demand far outstripped supply with early cars selling for substantial premiums over the basic Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price MSRP and prospective buyers competing for vehicle-production slots.
While capable of truly blistering performance these cars are also renowned for their deceptive practicality in everyday traffic with a light clutch and the interior which pays homage to the original GT40 is complete with leather-trimmed carbon fiber seats electric windows and air conditioning. Unlike its 1960s predecessor however the GT interior is remarkably comfortable with ample space for taller drivers. From the last Ford GT model year this example from 2006 is an exceptionally original vehicle offered in like new condition. In addition to the owners manual it is complete with factory tow hooks an air compressor and Battery Tender all from the manufacturer. If you are looking for one of the fastest modern supercars with direct lineage to the GT40 and stunning performance and technology this 2006 Ford GT marks a truly outstanding find for smart collectors
