The successor of the popular Mark VII again shared underpinnings with its Ford and Mercury cousins – the Thunderbird and the Cougar, respectively. In the late 1990s, the personal-luxury coupe segment saw a major decline in sales. Following the 1998 model year, the Mark VIII was discontinued without any replacement. The Mark series began in 1969 with the Mark III model of the Lincoln Mark Series. The last of the Mark VIII’s utilized a detuned version of the Ford SVT Mustang Cobra engine – a 4.6L DOHC engine. In 1997 through the end of production, the DOHC engine had a distributorless, coil-on-plug ignition system and the 4R70W four speed automatic transmission received heavier-duty internal components for the extra performance of the engine. The last two years also had all-speed traction control as standard equipment, a welcome addition for the performance enthusiast behind the wheel. The LSC option produced 290 hp and used firmer shocks and larger stabilizer bars for even better handling and control. Only 8752 LSC’s were produced in 1998, the last year of the Mark-series production. The car that is up for auction is a low mileage example that is truly the last of an era. Showing just under 64,000 miles, this beautiful car still wears its original Ivory paint and the leather interior is still soft. It’s obvious the car has lived a pampered life. There is only one small flawed area on the body where a recent mishap left a mark in the lower front bumper fascia. A competent body man could easily repair it and blend the paint where no one could ever tell. This unfortunate accident happened just days before the transport truck picked it up from its Southern home in Alabama. Mark VIII production ended with the 1998 model year. The last one rolled off the assembly line on June 9, 1998. Don’t miss your chance to buy this fine automobile and experience what performance cars can be; luxurious, elegant, comfortable, and fast.
