The first 911 was an evolution of the Volkswagen-derived Porsche 356. Conceived as a bigger four-seat 356, the 911 became an all-new car featuring a new and a brand-new air-cooled, OHC flat-six, initially making 128 horsepower from 1,991cc. The styling was the work of Ferdinand Alexander “Butzi” Porsche. It echoed the 356’s familiar fastback silhouette, but it turned out to be a timeless design
More than 820,000 Porsche 911s have been built, making it one of the most successful sports cars in the world. For each of its seven generations the engineers in Zuffenhausen and Weissach have reinvented it, time and time again demonstrating to the world the innovative power of the Porsche brand. Ferry Porsche best described its unique qualities: “The 911 is the only car you could drive on an African safari or at Le Mans, to the theater or through New York City traffic.”
The 996, which rolled off the assembly line from 1997 to 2005, represented a major turning point in the history of the 911. It retained all the character of its classic heritage, but was an entirely new automobile. This comprehensively redesigned generation was the first to be driven by a water-cooled boxer engine. Thanks to its four-valve cylinder heads it achieved 300 horsepower and broke new ground in terms of reduced emissions, noise, and fuel consumption. Its most obvious exterior feature were the headlights with integrated turn signals, at first controversial but later copied by many other manufacturers. On the inside, drivers experienced an entirely new cockpit. Driving comfort now also played a greater role alongside the typical sporty characteristics. With the 996 Porsche launched an unprecedented product offensive with a whole series of new variations.
This 1999 911 Carrera had a list price of $70,400 equipped with the optional 6-speed manual transmission. It was powered by a flat 6 port injected engine that produced 296 horsepower. It is equipped with the optional 6-speed manual transmission and has the aero kit. It has been properly maintained and serviced and is presented with a clean Carfax.
