In 1965 Carroll Shelby keenly modified the already popular “Fastback Mustang” with real performance upgrades directed toward dominating the B-Production category racing for Ford in SCCA, “Sports Car Club of America”.
It was outfitted with a lightweight fiberglass hood, pin locks and functional hood scoop. The clean looking grill, devoid of “Mustang or Ford” emblems was instead substituted with Shelby badges.
All 65’ Shelby GT-350’s were Wimbeldon white with bold blue side-stripes located below the door bearing the cars designation. The LeMans blue racing stripes running over the hood, roof and trunk, were optional. The interior was black and the rear seat was removed for a racing-accessible interior spare tire. A special instrument cluster located in the center dash housed a large 8,000 RPM tach. and oil pressure gauge. Roll bar was optional. Standard were competition seat belts, a special wood 3 spoke steering wheel and 4 speed transmission.
The 289 c.u./ 306 hp V8 had solid lifters, a special cobra aluminum intake, cobra aluminum oil pan, matching valve covers, and tri-y headers. Suspension was extensively modified by Shelby over the stock mustang for road racing and used a 9” Ford differential. Goodyear Blue Dot high performance 775×15” tires were mounted on Cragar/Shelby chrome wheels with aluminum centers. There were only 562 of these cars produced.
SFM 5018 is a very rare and original 65’ Shelby. It is one of the few remaining 2 digit cars in existence (car #18). Celebrity status is also bestowed on this car as it was originally retained by Reggie Jackson. The car has recently undergone a complete and professional “money no object” rotisserie restoration and a professional (original) engine rebuild. Only 458 pampered miles since restoration by the country’s foremost Shelby and Cobra restoration expert. SFM 5018 is a consistent “Best of show” and “1st Place” winner. It has been meticulously maintained by a fastidious owner; covered and garaged in a climate controlled automotive sanctuary in So. Cal. This is by far the finest, neatly detailed 65’ Shelby GT-350 in the world.
