1953 Corvette Roadster
This Corvette is number 199 of 300 originally built
This highly original 1953 Corvette was stored, untouched in a private collection in New York from 1964 until 2004 when the longtime owner entrusted his friend and noted Corvette restorer, Dominick Salvemino, with the task of performing a sympathetic restoration that would preserve the originality of his beloved, yet aged, ’53 Corvette. Once in Mr. Salvemino’s shop, Vette Dreams (Babylon, NY), the body was carefully taken off of the frame and given a comprehensive restoration of all cosmetics components and mechanical systems.
The cosmetics were approached with sympathy and respect for their originality. The entire body was carefully inspected for damage and delamination and then stripped and repainted with just enough Polo White paint so that you can still see the fiberglass weave. The underside of the body was cleaned and left in its original state. The rust-free chassis was stripped and painted without any repairs being necessary. A new Sportsman red vinyl interior was installed along with restored gauges and a new black soft top. In the trunk are an original set of side windows, a spare tire and jack.
A few years later in 2007, #199 was sold to John O’Quinn where it was the only ’53 Corvette in his very significant and very large collection cars. After his untimely death, it was sold to a collector of iconic sports cars where it sat among early Ferraris and Jaguars. In July 2012, it was sent to Corvette specialist, Doug Pratte, of Only Yesterday Classic Autos in San Diego, CA for a detailed inspection and mechanical sorting in preparation for this auction. Because the Corvette had seen so few miles since the restoration was completed, it needed a full service and mechanical freshening to become the excellent running and driving example it is today. The steering box, Carter carburetors, shocks, brakes and cooling system were completely rebuilt and sorted. Mr. Pratte, who has worked on quite a few Blue Flame Corvettes, regards this one as the best running and driving example he has had the pleasure of exercising.
The engine number (LAY546905), block casting number (3701481), cylinder head casting number (3836066) and all corresponding date codes confirm this is a matching numbers example of the iconic 1953 Corvette Roadster.
