While this concept car cannot claim a Le Mans win, it is perhaps as significant as it convinced Ford Motor Company and the public that Ford should bring out the ultra high performance car that it now calls the Ford GT. Safir GT 40 Spares, Limited built this fantastic car and it is now offered for sale as the first of the two Ford GT40 cars which revived the GT40 car of the 1960’s. This is the concept car that was photographed for the official Ford Press Package. The car appeared
in all of the major magazines. It was introduced and displayed with the prototype car on January 5, 2002 by William C. Ford at Cobo Hall in Detroit, just prior to the opening of the 2002 North American International Auto Show. The prototype vehicle, having been completed only two days before the introduction, was unavailable for the promotional work prior to the Show. This concept car toured the United States for the next three years. Upon completion of its tour, it was returned to its pristine, pre-introduction condition.
The car is numbered GT40-1147 which is the next serial number in the GT40 number sequence from the 1960’s. The concept car is the only one of the two cars that carries the GT40 designation. It is the owner’s understanding that the prototype car, GT-1148, which is owned by Ford carries the Ford GT designation, and is not for sale. This car is for display purposes only, is full size, rolls, and is fitted with a remote controlled system, which allows working interior and exterior lighting to be operated for maximum visual effect. The car comes with complete documentation from Ford and Safir, the builder, attesting to its authenticity and provenance. Completing this documentation will be a certified letter agreement signed by Ford attesting to the fact that Safir is the legitimate builder of the famous GT40 trademark.
