Recalling their highly successful Top Fuel dragster effort of 1968, Carroll Shelby and Don “The Snake” Prudhomme created the Super Snake Prudhomme Edition Mustang to take on the purpose-built Mopar Challenger factory drag cars. As stated by Carroll Shelby at the new drag car’s launch, “Don is an exceptional drag racer and I’m proud that he drove my first Top Fuel car in 1968.” He continued, “By leveraging Don’s experience, we turned a really good car into a great drag racer that will beat up on the MOPAR and bow tie brigade right out of the box.”
Complete with tilting front ends and menacing Kenne-Bell cold-air intakes poking through their hoods, the new Super Snake raised output of Ford’s blown 5.4-liter V-8 engine to 750-800 horsepower depending on fuel quality and octane rating. In addition to aerodynamic tweaks, the Super Snake Prudhomme Edition included five-point Impact safety harnesses, Borla side-exit exhaust, front and rear adjustable BMR racing suspension and drag tires, with optional street tires optionally available. For an even more aggressive stance and improved aerodynamics, revised lower rocker panels were included in the package.
Also speaking at the introduction of the Super Snake Prudhomme Edition, Amy Boylan, the president of Shelby Automobiles, said, “Working with Don on this project was a great experience for our design team,” adding “Carroll and Don earned their stripes in competition over the years, so we had to build a car that would continue their racing domination. Our Prudhomme Edition GT500 Super Snake builds on that legacy and gives Shelby enthusiasts today a way to rule the quarter mile in their town.” Just 100 Prudhomme Edition packages were planned for release as a post-title upgrade that could be fitted to any 2005-up Mustang at a cost of $100,000 excluding the cost of the base car. Just 7 Prudhomme Edition Mustangs were built from new and the example offered here is car number 4 of the series. Predating Ford’s own new-generation Cobra Jet Mustang drag cars and far more rare, this incredible race-bred performer is complete with both Carroll Shelby’s and Don Prudhomme’s autographs on the dash.
