At first glance, Porsche’s final-series 356C, which debuted in mid-1963, seemed to differ very little from the prior 356B and continued to use the T-6 body type introduced during 1962. However, the new 356C represented a major step forward with standard Ate four-wheel disc brakes based on the Dunlop design, a higher-lift camshaft for the 1600C engine, new flat-face hubcaps, and deeper bucket seats. The uprated 356C/1600SC replaced the Super 90 in the Porsche model lineup and provided heightened performance and drivability with 125 mph now available while maintaining exceptional fuel economy. Representing the ultimate evolution of the basic 356, the 356C was produced until September 1965, when both the all-new 911 and 356-powered 912 succeeded it.
Complete with its Certificate of Authenticity, this 1964 Porsche 356C/1600SC Cabriolet retains its factory-original Ivory White/red colors and matching numbers 1600SC engine. Handsomely and professionally restored with a bare-metal repaint, it also received a factory-specification undercoated chassis, and a new wiring harness. New chrome-plated items include the factory-dated wheels and the complete vent-window assemblies, which were restored with all-new weather stripping to factory standards. The instruments and their housings were completely restored by North Hollywood Instruments. The interior of the windshield frame is painted to match the interior color, and the interior was completely and painstakingly restored to concours-level standards. A new outside mirror and day/night mirror were installed as well. The tight and very well fitted new cabriolet top includes the pad, headliner, and a properly fitted matching boot with cover bag.
Engine work included align-boring of the case, installation of a machined and heat-treated crank, new cylinders, pistons, bearings, and a new oil-pump gear. The cylinder heads were machined and fitted with new valves. Engine-bay detailing is beyond excellent with all external engine tinwork and the cooling-fan shroud were powder-coated, the metal lines refinished, the fuel-system fully overhauled and detailed, the carburetors were overhauled, and a new exhaust-system was fitted. The transaxle was rebuilt, detailed, and fitted with a new clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing. The braking system was completely rebuilt, including installation of new lines, overhauled calipers, new rotors, and a new master cylinder.
The fresh-air vents were restored and replaced, and the entire car was finished with such factory-correct details as painted nuts and bolts where required, tire valve-stem clips, and restored high/low horns. In testament to its exceptional quality, this car was shown during August 2013 at Carmel, California’s Quail Motorsports Reunion. Complete with an owner’s manual and toolkit, it remains simply outstanding in quality and presentation throughout and stands apart from other restorations with its exceptional detailing and the technical correctness that concours judges demand.
