The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren ‘supercar’ represents a spiritual homage to the immortal W 196-based 300SLR of 1955, which won the Mille Miglia that year with Stirling Moss and Denis Jenkinson. Introduced in 2003 and developed jointly with the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking, UK, the SLR McLaren utilized extremely strong and lightweight carbon-fiber construction and cutting-edge technologies throughout.
Power is delivered by Mercedes’ 5,439 cc supercharged SOHC V-8, and all-aluminum unit with three valves per cylinder and race-derived dry-sump lubrication. A Lysholm-type twin-screw supercharger with twin intercoolers provides 13-psi boost pressure, good for 617 bhp at 6,500 rpm. The AMG Speedshift R transmission provides three manual modes. Other stunning technical features include a “Sensotronic” brake-by-wire system with carbon-ceramic discs and an automatic airbrake. Performance is shattering, with road tests quoting acceleration from rest to 60 mph in the 3.2- to 3.5-second range, the quarter-mile in 11 to 11.5 seconds, and a 209-mph top speed, with over 1.0 g on the skidpad! The SLR McLaren features passenger amenities and comfort to match, plus “real world” drivability.
Finshed in Pure Black with black leather upholstery, this excellent US-Delivery example from 2008 was sold new at Mercedes-Benz of South Atlanta, Georgia. Carrying a base price of $495,000 with a plethora of standard appearance, comfort, convenience, and performance features, optional equipment included Black Carbon Trim, 19-inch Turbine Wheels, a Beige and Black Top, and XL Driver and Passenger Seats. Following purchase by the original owner, the SLR was serviced at Mercedes-Benz of Tampa, Florida and then Crown Automobile, the Mercedes-Benz dealer located in Birmingham, Alabama. The first owner drove the car over just 1,404 miles.
During 2012, the SLR was sent to the famed tuners at Florida’s RENNtech for installation of the high-dollar RENNtech Package 1 for the SLR, comprising an upgraded ECU module, supercharger pulley, and intercooler-pump upgrade. The RENNtech invoice for nearly $9,500 accompanies the sale of the car at auction. During March 2013, the SLR was acquired by the second owner, under whom the supercar was inspected and completely serviced by official dealer Mercedes-Benz of Lynnwood, Washington, with the work including replacement of both rear shock absorbers, a brake-fluid flush and renewal, and the engine’s dry-sump oiling system drained, refilled, and the required filters and seals replaced. Detailed invoices for this work issued by Mercedes-Benz of Lynnwood accompany the sale the SLR as well. In addition, the SLR is offered complete with a clean and clear Carfax report that was recently issued to the consignor and dated December 13, 2013. An amazing race-bred supercar with legendary heritage from Formula 1 titans Mercedes-Benz and McLaren, it is a stunning find at auction in the model’s most desirable and exclusive open Roadster form, all with just 1,674 miles from new!
