Reprising the venerable “Brooklands” nameplate and introduced to acclaim at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show, Bentley’s new two-door, four-seat luxury coupe was based on the Azure convertible and made available for 2008. Clearly marking Bentley’s return to its heritage of elegant, hand-made high-performance luxury coupes, the Brooklands was assembled at Bentley’s Crewe facilities with production limited to just 550 examples. An amazing 110 man-hours was devoted to the sleek hardtop roof of the Brooklands alone, and 19 hours were required to sew just the leather-wrapped steering wheel. As such, the Brooklands Coupe represents a true automotive tour de force on all possible levels from conception to design and production.
Powered by a twin-turbocharged, 6.75-liter V-8 engine producing 530 bhp and a massive 774 pounds-feet of torque at just 3,600 rpm, the Brooklands Coupe delivered true ‘supercar’ performance including acceleration from rest to 60 mph in just 5.0 seconds en route to a 13.3-second quarter-mile and 184-mph top end. However, this stunning performance was not achieved at the expense of passenger comfort and refinement.
Just 50 examples of the Brooklands were imported new to the USA, including this example, beautifully finished in rich Burgundy with Parchment hides. In fact, Bentley factory records indicate that this is the only Brooklands delivered to the USA in this stunning color combination. According to its window sticker, the Brooklands Coupe carried a $340,990 suggested retail price when new. With the comprehensive options selected for this particular car, the final price rose to $408,181.
Among the special additional features are carbon-ceramic brakes, Naim premium audio, Vavona wood-veneer trim with Cherry substrate, diamond-pattern seat inserts, a 3-D Bentley “Flying B” hood mascot, striking 20-inch, 5-spoke, 2-piece aluminum-alloy wheels, a reversing camera, dark-tinted stainless-steel, Bentley marque badges, personalized sill plates, and more. Wooden trim was also upgraded with optional cross banding and inlays using Sequoia root wood specified at the Factory from 20 year-old inventory. Quite likely the ultimate Grand Touring coupe ever conceived and built, this 2009 Bentley Brooklands Coupe stands proudly as a superb example and exciting find at auction.
